by Menghi. or simply, “El discreto encanto de la burguesÃa” is a 1901 prose narrative by Spanish author Benito Púrez Galdós, originally published in two parts in the monthly review Semana from the second quarter of 1901 and first printed as a whole as part two of the novel El Revisor (1905).Q:
Error while piping data
I have two files, one contains string with some values:
check.txt
bla bla val1|val2|val3
bla bla val4|val5|val6|val7
bla bla val8|val9|val10|val11
and I wanna get this values, but I get error:
cat check.txt | xargs grep -o “\[a-zA-Z0-9]*”
grep: [i:] No such file or directory
If I do it this way I get all rows in one line.
cat check.txt | grep -o “\[a-zA-Z0-9]*”
bla bla val1|val2|val3
bla bla val4|val5|val6|val7
bla bla val8|val9|val10|val11
If I do grep this way:
cat check.txt | grep -o “\[a-zA-Z0-9]*”
I get whole file as output, but I need only the first values:
bla bla val1
bla bla val2
bla bla val3
bla bla val4
bla bla val5
bla bla val6
bla bla val7
bla bla val8
bla bla val9
bla bla val10
bla bla val11
So, how to use pipes to get exactly what I want?
A:
Use:
cat check.txt | grep -o ‘\[a-zA-Z0-9]*’
The “problem” is that grep -o is looking for a file called [i:] after an a-zA-Z0-9*. But the shell is expanding the [i:] into an empty string.
I suggest
